Learn The Secrets of Teaching Your Baby Sign Language

Learning a language is a complicated process, and even children manage to do it by following a series of orderly steps. To begin with, they learn to distinguish different sounds, and recognize patterns or syllables that they hear often. Tone is also very important, as it conveys the emotion behind the words. A child looks at your face and begins to understand what your facial expression means. For example, if you repeat the child’s name out loud, and have a happy, smiling face, very young children will respond positively quite quickly.

A child usually learns to understand language long before he can say the words himself. A child can follow simple instructions even at 4-5 months. It can recognize frequently repeated key words like “no”, and “more”, their names, and favorite words like “eat”!

The main problem is that there is a gap between when a child can understand the language, and when he can communicate back. This can lead to an intense amount of frustration. So if we can find a way to help the child to let him know what he thinks and feels, it can reduce the level of frustration in the child – and in ourselves! It is possible to do this, long before a child begins to use words – it is called “Baby Signs”. You can use the child’s signs as a first way to help the child to communicate, and it is also valuable to enhance the child’s language development.

Teaching baby sign language is very simple. Take a word that you use often with the child, such as “more” or “eat,” and make a simple gesture each time you use the word. For example, for “eat”, you can point to the mouth. Make sure you use the same gesture every time you use the word. Speak clearly, and face the child as you say the word. Use an enthusiastic tone, make sure the child is looking, and when you have the child’s attention, repeat the word and gesture a few times.

Most parents find that if they start using the baby’s signs at the age of 6-7 months, the baby can usually imitate the gestures back to you and communicate what he wants in time which is about 8-10 months old.

Sometimes parents are worried that the child will come to rely on signs, and inadvertently delay the development of speech. In fact, most of the time the opposite is true. Using signs, language connections in the child’s brain are created and developed very early. This really tends to give the child a beginning of communication, and thus accelerates the process of speech development. While that may not be true for all children, it is true for many.

Meanwhile, baby signs allow your child to communicate their wishes and thoughts to you at a very early age, and thus reduce the frustration that many children suffer before learning to speak. It will also be easier for you to understand what the child wants, and thus make parenting much easier.

So baby sign language has two advantages – it helps your child develop communication skills, and it also helps improve your parenting.
