Don’t Feed That to Baby!

Not all grub that’s delicious for mom is fair game for baby’s tummy. Think twice before offering these to your children.

  • Popcorn – This delicious snack is reported to be one of the most common choking hazards for children. Parents should remember not to offer unless the Baby is supervised and over a year. If given to children over one year old, choose only the fluffy pieces of the popcorn. Avoid the hulls and unpopped kernels, which are sharp and can get stuck in the teeth and airways. Opt for plain versions with caramel or cheese, due to the high sugar and salt content found in the latter.
  • Cakes with Honey – Honey should not be given to children under one year. That’s because Clostridium botulinum spores can germinate in their digestive system and cause infant botulism, a rare but fatal disease. For the same reason, do not give them cakes or bread baked with honey, because doing it alone cannot totally destroy the spores. However, commercial foods containing honey (such as baby food and breakfast cereals) are safe for your baby because they have been heated enough to eradicate the spores.
  • Tiramisu – Because of the alcohol in it, babies and children consume the popular Italian sweets. The dessert contains caffeine, which can cause stomach upset, headache and increased heart rate.
  • Bird’s Nest – Pricy as it may be, the bird’s nest is an allergenic food that can cause symptoms such as vomiting, rashes and abdominal pain. This is especially so if other family members are allergic to the protein found in it. Only introduce this Chinese delicacy to your child only after he turns one. If your child is healthy and has no allergies, the bird’s nest can be consumed in small quantities as a tonic. Sometimes it can provide relief for prolonged dry cough.
  • Ginseng – The doting grandmother may want to make a double-boiled ginseng soup for the family, but this is one herb you want your child to stay away from unless advised otherwise by a doctor. Panax ginseng is not safe for children and can cause the death of children due to intoxication. Some doctors may advise against eating particular types of ginseng when the child suffers from qi deficiency. But even for healthy children, long-term consumption is not recommended, because it can lead to early puberty.
  • Pearl Powder – When you were little, your mother may have lured you with the promise of radiant skin as she downed a vial. The truth is, the preparation of crushed pearls is not a health supplement. It is a mineral that can be difficult for the child’s digestive system to absorb. It should be consumed only under the advice of a doctor, and is often reserved for the treatment of more serious diseases, such as spasms or extremely high fever. Children with G6PD deficiency should be avoided.
  • Sashimi – No matter the reputation of the restaurant you dine at, do not give this to children under two, even in small amounts. In fact, raw food is a forbidden territory for young people, because the intestinal parasites present in it are nothing to sneeze at.
  • French fries – Because they are high in saturated fat and loaded with salt, Charlotte frowns on these for children. But if Junior does not stop bothering about his happy meal in a fast food, you can introduce fries and other fried foods in moderation after he is a year old. This is also the age when you can start using oil while cooking your food.
  • Fizzy Drinks – You may be a fan of soft drinks, but before you empty the rest of the soda in the sippy cup, think about the health of your child and the pearly whites. The sugar and acid content can also damage Baby’s emerging teeth. Dental concerns aside, carbonated drinks can also ruin your kids’ appetite for nutritious foods.
  • Runny Eggs – Crucial for cell growth and tissue repair, eggs are known to be a wonderful source of protein. They are also rich in cholesterol and choline, both of which are essential for brain development in the first three years of life. However, eggs that boil should not be given to children under one because of a risk of food poisoning related to salmonella. Boil the egg well until it is firm and there is no trace of liquid egg visible. So Junior eats right away.
  • Ham – Do not add salt or sugar to the baby’s food until he turns one, so ham should not be allowed. There is no added nutritional benefit to choosing ham over fresh meat. Also, introducing flavored foods (with a high salt content) too soon would encourage him to develop a preference for salty dishes.
  • Whole Nuts – These should be reserved for when your child is two years old. Otherwise they can be a suffocation risk. Nuts must be chewed well, but the baby’s molars are developed only after about 24 months. When Junior is ready for whole nuts, the dietitian recommends healthier varieties, without salt, baked in the oven.
