Could Computers and the Internet REALLY Replace TESOL English Teachers?
Difficult Question
At English ELT conferences, workshops and TESOL conferences, one question I am often asked is whether I think computers will replace English teachers. I also review the movie “Matrix”. In the beginning, our neophyte hero “Neo” is learning Kung Fu while connected to a computer. A few hours later, he opens his eyes, sits up, and announces, “I know Kung Fu!” The following pictures show how an older, more experienced instructor (also known as a coach) goes about evaluating the “skills” of a young Neo. “Show me”, the teacher asks as usual. Now if you have been following me this far, you have a clue of my answer to this teacher’s question.
Computers instead of a human English teacher?
Are you telling the truth?
“No way, Jose.”
But English teachers, don’t rest completely. What I think we NEED to do is “reinvent” part of the “school” concept. This is what I mean.
Reinventing the School Idea
Schools, at every level, will need to be connected to many external resources. This means that the “traditional” board, writing and OHP will need to provide additional, integrated solutions that expand the learning environment to an infinite extent. I mean work; audio, video, internet, webcams, IM, TXTing, chat, email, RSS, even real-time multimedia feeds. The class and its students will be connected with additional features such as:
• Companies
• Libraries
• Archives
• Government equipment
• Science, technology and medical facilities
• Companies
• Laboratories
• Other educational institutions
In this way, students can often use learning activities such as online quests, online activities and field trips to expand and deepen their knowledge of social situations and concepts. The students may not have access to the information, resources and resources available at the school they attend. Instead, the world, in fact, is their classroom.
Impact on Education
How will this affect education? Well, if you’re studying computers, is the opportunity to go to Microsoft Corp. and education can not be a real benefit? Technical students would undoubtedly benefit from direct contact with MIT (http://web.mit.edu/), Cal Tech (http://www.caltech.edu/), or Lucent Corp. .lucent.com/) Engineering students would do well to find NASA on the Internet at: (http://www.nasa.gov/home/index.html), Boeing (http://www.boeing.com/) , Westinghouse (http://www.westinghouse.com/home.html), Dupont (http://www2.dupont.com/DuPont_Home/en_US/index.html) or other top brands.
Students of Law, Government, Human Rights and Political Science would be at the top of their game by delving into Federal, State and local government databases, or the FBI (http://www.fbi.gov/), the London Metropolitan Police (http://www .met.police.uk/), CIA (http://www.cia.gov/) and ATF ([http://www.atf.treas.gov/] ) databases that are being tracked are available locally, regionally and nationally. Health positions can be up-to-date with real-life activities in Pathology, Epidemics research, information on responding to natural disasters and public health threats through the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/), medical and health networks or the UN. (http://www.un.org/). The possibilities are almost endless.
Therefore, I agree that the “traditional” methods of teaching and learning, not only English and other foreign languages, but also many other areas, will continue to change to support the needs of students, business and education. With CBL (Content-Based Learning), well-prepared English TEFL teachers, with knowledge, skills and advanced technology, are not afraid of computers. Technology is another powerful tool for promoting the acquisition of new knowledge and skills, now and in the future.
