These two unusual items were among the most surprising when we asked members of the Great Hotels of the World about the strangest items left in their properties.

Following the success of last year’s unusual guest request stories, we decided to ask our hotels for unusual and unique stories. And even though we expected silly answers, nothing could have prepared us for what was revealed.

It seems the most overlooked thing has to do with being a little silly in the bedroom – of the 30+ luxury hotels we asked, more than a third told us they found sex toys in their rooms. Of these, the most surprising has to be from the Quay Hotel in Wales, who discovered a “doll of sorts with extra woodwork” in some of the rooms. The next most popular items left are wigs and false teeth. Not unusual at all, although it does make you wonder how someone could forget something so important in the back, especially if they looked in the mirror before setting off. In another case of forgotten teeth, a guest at the Eurostars Grand Marina GL in Barcelona asked the hotel to send their teeth to the UK. Knowing how reliable Royal Mail can be at times, we wonder if they got lost along the way…

Londa in Cyprus found a suitable Da Vinci Code riddle when they found a book with a ‘strange cover’ without a title in one of their rooms. Throwing money in the street or leaving money in a hotel room can happen when you’re on vacation, but what’s the big deal? They returned to the hotel and decided to stay an extra night, which, considering how much money they had left, was probably small change for them…

St. Nicolas Bay in Crete once found two goldfish in a bowl of water left by a stranger who apparently did not want to carry them home. Meanwhile, the Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque in Tenerife once found a cockatoo locked in a room. The owners then requested that it be returned to them in a private plane. Which begs the question if they care so much about it, why forget it in the first place?

The Grand Hotel Principe Piemonte near Pisa once found a dog in one of their rooms, without further explanation or asking to return it to its owner. At Moevenpick Istanbul, some dog-loving guests left behind the kennel they brought with them on the trip.

But it is the Tivoli Marina Vilamoura in the Algarve that has the most amazing animal story. One of their guests went fishing at the hotel and came back with a shark, which he kept in the hotel bathroom – not knowing that sharks need salt water, not tap water. When the poor animal began to weaken, the visitor apparently decided to leave it alone, which caused the cleaner to panic when he entered the room to clean it up. The fish returned to its natural habitat, and lived what can be expected to be a long and fulfilling life.
