The Market Town of Holt, Norfolk
The market town of Holt, Norfolk, England has a population of about 3,600. It lives in the east of the country, not far from the coast of the North Sea. It is also approximately 23 miles from the largest city of Norwich. It also has no railway station, which is near Sheringham, on the coast.
The name Holt is of Anglo-Saxon origin, meaning “forest” in that language. Indeed, the town sits on the highest point known as Cromer Ridge. It grew up around two ancient roads (called “roads”), so it was natural that settlement began at the crossroads of these roads.
Holt is mentioned in a survey of Norman property issued by William I (the Conqueror) of 1096 called the Domesday Book. The town held a weekly market from its inception until 1960. A fire destroyed the town in 1708, burning almost to the ground in just three hours.
As a result of this fire, most of the town – which received donations from all over the world – was rebuilt in the Georgian style in fashion at the time. One of the unique, and memorable, exceptions was the rebuilding of the Norman church, dedicated to Saint Andrew, in its original form. Holt also benefited from the railroad in 1887, a project that ran until 1964.
The traditional and non-majority area of Norfolk, where Holt lives, has a population of about 841,000. It is the lowest in the natural environment, and the seventh most populous of the non-metropolitan counties in England. This area began to have a settlement before the Romans, when a tribe called the Iceni settled in the first century BC. Both the county and the town of Holt are English in general, and modern.
