Learn Technical English Fast: Use ESP Workshops to Promote Reading Comprehension in LEP Learners
With the continued growth of English as a communication tool for education, science, technology, business and commerce, high school technical students are finding the space they need to manage advanced technical courses in technical English. If you teach EFL, professional or business English, or teach a technical subject in English, you can use ESP lessons to improve the reading and comprehension skills of LEP students.
A group of my Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students studying an Electronic Engineering class on antenna design had an American English textbook, so it was necessary for me to convert the text topics into a series of ESP reading and comprehension discussions that were designed to allow. students should use written deduction strategies to help them understand.
Curriculum List
When my Spanish-speaking LEP students in the Faculty of Law had to learn about Capital Punishment used in the USA, I also created several activities such as written discussions and TV presentations.
For my LEP Economics students to do a comparative study of the population of Colombia (44,222,000 people) is:
o South Korea (47,700,000 people)
o Poland (38,587,000 people)
o Argentina (38,428,000 people)
o South Africa (45,026,000 people)
o Ukraine (48,523,000 people)
ESP’s series of workshops and presentations have been very effective in promoting reading and understanding of their program’s technology in English. The process of creating written ESP workshops is not easy, but it is worth the necessary effort. All of these benefit students in reading and understanding complex texts and enhance the skills and abilities of the EFL teacher.
Preparing for the Meeting
In preparation for the ESP writing workshop, the reading material is broken down into manageable sections that can be easily understood by LEP students. Students are taught to identify things such as:
o Cognates – words that look the same in different languages; True cognates have the same or similar meanings, usages and meanings in different languages while false cognates have different meanings, usages and meanings in different languages.
o Conjunctions – words that join simple and complex sentences with others. Examples of conjunctions are: and, but, or, so. They can be of different types, depending on their function. There are conjunctions that show addition, contrast, timing, choice, cause or effect

In addition, a list of important, high-speed terms is prepared along with a glossary of technical terms that may be difficult for students. Pre-reading, reading and post-reading activities are included in the written text to complement and complete the package. A variety of exercises are used to provide internal practice with lexis and reading grammar. Full support in the form of pictures, images, pictures and images is included, as well as videos, animations and sound files when reading and understanding discussions are made online in websites, blogs or class pages.
Written ESP courses in writing and comprehension can be an invaluable aid to LEP students who need to understand and use technology related to their field or course of study or work. A good workshop may take three to five hours to prepare, but it is consistent and can be used and reused for many years. With regular practice and regularity in preparing ESP discussions, teachers can significantly reduce preparation time. The benefits to students are countless.
