In order to be admitted to an engineering or medical school, a student must pass a rigorous entrance exam with stress on Math and Science subjects. Only the best performers can be accepted into a prestigious college or university. This made parents, students, teachers and schools pay more attention to math and science.
The maturity of Math
Children learn to multiply from an early age. Every evening, you review the multiplication tables. This practice makes children better at mental math. As they grow older, they begin to learn mathematical rules and procedures. Indian methods are based on learning and doing. Children are made to solve many problems in each math concept so that it is secondary to solving the problems. But in a country with over a billion people and not enough opportunities for education or employment, being good at the test is critical to one’s short-term goal of entering the race.
The Development of the Computer Industry
These math and science skills and knowledge of the English language became valuable assets as computers and software developed. The US needed tons of programmers. India had its foundations ready. Young graduates took advantage of this opportunity and took courses in programming languages, databases and other technologies. Being good at math often leads to being good at programming and thinking critically. People who didn’t get into engineering colleges and study math or physics also started doing diplomas and masters in computer applications. Every year there are hundreds of thousands of Indians who come to the US, find jobs in the IT industry and make the US their home. When they have families and children, they use the Indian method for their children who go to US schools. Children of Indian origin living in the US do very well in math and science. Mathematics in the US
In my opinion, US math textbooks are well written and illustrated. They describe the concept, history and use of a particular topic. This gives the child a good education instead of learning a formula. However, the problem is the lack of power. Whether it’s physical fitness or mental fitness, strong discipline, regular drills and consistent goals to improve and gain are essential. Math takes practice. When you solve a math problem, it’s either right or wrong – there are no grades like average or fair. In order to solve a problem correctly and quickly, a person needs practice. If teachers do not teach this discipline, students will get more wrong answers than right ones. They fall into the negative category of ‘I’m not good at math-I hate math-Why do we need math’ and so on. If teachers can direct students to a regular math program, the playing field can be changed. They start solving problems, enjoy it and develop interest in the subject. It will build confidence in mathematics and fear will be gone. After all, school math is not Rocket Science! If students in India can do well in mathematics, so can students in other countries.
