Learning Alternatives: Which One’s for You?
Introduction
“Good morning students”, greeted M’s Crabapple standing at the front and center of the tidy classroom. The crowd of over 30 students responded, “Good morning M’s Crabapple.” He continued, “First we will call names.” Then he called and stopped each student when they answered, “they are there”. The next step was to explain the lessons that were given that day. There was copying work on the board – a lot of work on the board, with staccato teaching and copying interspersed with recitations, broken once in the morning for fifteen minutes and resting again in the afternoon for lunch. The drill was resumed at the bell of 1 o’clock, and continued until the last bell of the day was broken at 3 o’clock. “Don’t forget to study and do your homework”, the school’s conductor shouted to the crowd of students rushing out as if leaving a sinking ship.
This must have been a “school day” for millions of students over the years.
Alternative Learning Methods
However, these days, the teaching profession has changed a lot. There are several possible learning strategies. What are some of the pros and cons of each of these learning styles? Let’s look at some of them.
Correspondence courses
Correspondence courses are traditionally, a class conducted through correspondence. Study materials arrive in the mail. The student then returns their final assignment by mail and waits for the next lesson to arrive in the mail. This process continues and repeats until all the required courses are completed. There is no contact with the teacher for the students other than the written word. Some programs today allow one to communicate by phone, email, or text messaging. Only motivated, independent students can benefit the most from this type of education.
Field Trips
Related to traditional school activities and independent learning, field trips involve students going outside their school or home to learn about a subject or topic. Resorts can include businesses such as factories, zoos, museums, zoos, zoos, public facilities such as fire stations, TV or radio studios, hospitals or police stations. Most large urban areas have one or more public radio stations with educational content. These programs are often part of an accredited course at a local College or University. Students watch (and often record) TV programs at home, take notes and study media as an integral part of their studies. Another useful method for the independent learner, this method does not encourage communication between the teacher (if there is one) and the student.
Continuing Education
When adults want to resume their education at some point in their lives, programs offered by Post-Secondary institutions that meet the needs of these students are called Continuing Education. Some last only a day or two. Some programs can last for weeks and the intensity can vary from one or two hours per week to daily classroom contact. Courses may focus on topics such as ethnic cooking, gardening, writing and drawing, or work-related areas such as welding, plumbing, languages, photography and construction. The most popular method today, these types of courses and programs encourage interaction between students in the classroom, interactive learning with full teachers for students. There is often a lot of feedback between the teacher and the students, as well as the students themselves.
We will not see a return to “traditional” education as described above. But with the proliferation of alternative learning methods, there is something for almost everyone. So get out of your routine.
