Faith Is An Abstract Noun
Faith can be a misused word, inside and outside the church. Inside, when we ask which church a person belongs to, we hear, “What faith do you belong to?” when the purpose is: “What about the congregation or religion who are you?” On the outside we hear, “I don’t believe in the government – in public education – in the family.” while the goal is: “I don’t have confidence in the government, etc.” Misuse outside the church is easily solved by correct wording. However, inside the church, misuse – since faith is the first way we approach God – can present a serious problem. Vigilance comes easily. .and a good understanding of English and a deep study of God’s Word and all its inspired writers.
The word faith in English grammar is a noun. Traditionally nouns are defined as names of people, places or things. Names also come in different forms. There are real names that have capital letters and common names that don’t. There are concrete and abstract names. Concrete nouns refer to something tangible, which can be seen, heard, touched, etc.: shoes, soup, grass, teacher. Intransitive nouns, on the other hand, refer to a state, condition, behavior, or state of a person that cannot be directly perceived – that is, seen, heard, touched: faith, love, courage, respect.
Concrete, I understand. For example, just looking at my old field shoes tells me almost everything I need to know about them: dirty, white shoes with torn soles; broken ropes, carelessly tied, stained with paint, grass and who remembers what. I can see it, touch it, smell it and, to prove the point, I can even taste it. In detail, on the other hand, I don’t understand easily. It’s not clear, it’s out of sight, it’s out of reach, it’s out of the corner. Just looking is not enough. In order to fully understand the faith, I must be taught.
Fortunately, I can be taught through parents, teachers in the church and many good writers of church history. Four examples: (1) The writer of Hebrews, the book of the Bible, gave a brief definition of faith in chapter 11 verse 1: “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” . . (KJV) (2) The Apostles Creed expanded the definition and provided the requirements of saving faith. (3) The Heidelberg Catechism in 1563, with 129 questions and answers, gave the church more meaning. (4) After 450 years, Heidelberg needed a translation and one of the best books available is Dr. GI Williamson, Heidelberg Catechism, Study Guide.
In the end, perhaps faith is best understood, not by its meaning, but by its purpose. A remarkable example found as a Theological Note in The Reformation Study Bible The title, “Faith and Work,” says, “Faith is a way or a tool by which a person is saved.” .. called by the Gospel when the gospel is heard through the work of the grace of the Holy Spirit. or news.”
My old clothes had to be just a look, but a well-known name faith it is important to read the Bible in depth and carefully examine the work of inspired writers. “What faith am I?” My answer should always be, “The faith spoken in the Apostles’ Creed; the way by which I am saved; the way by which I stand before God in the righteousness of Christ; the way by which I obtain eternal life.”
