Phony Predictions – Nostradamus and the World Trade Center
False predictions
Here we go again!
Another catastrophe, another false prediction from the ever famous 16th century prognosticator Michel de Nostredame – Nostradamus for common use.
The computer web is hooked on a “quatrain” said to have been written by him in “1654”. He is supposed to have predicted the attack on the World Trade Center towers and the start of World War III. There are several versions floating around.
The prevalence follows:
In the year of the new century and nine months
From heaven will come a great one king of terror
The sky will burn at forty-five degrees
The fire is approaching the great new city
In the city of York there will be a great collapse.
Two twin brothers torn from chaos
While the fortress falls the great the leader will fall.
The third great war will begin when the great city burns.
Some versions add even more dramatic prophecies:
Day 11 of 9 months, two metal birds will crash
Two tall statues in the new city, and the world will soon end.
Let’s leave aside the fact that Nostradamus died in 1566. Consider, instead, the more blatant fabrications designed to titillate thrill-hungry web surfers.
Fortunately, there are a few websites — like snopes.com hosted by Barbara Mikkelson — that scour the web to expose hoaxes.
The 1654 hooey is rooted in an essay by Neil Marshall, a student at Brock University in Canada in the early 1990s. He composed the quatrain and the false date as a reported example of how forgers could mutilate a quatrain of Nostradamus for a malicious effect:
In the city of God there will be a great throne.
Two brothers will be torn apart by Chaos.
While the fortress lasts, the great leader will succumb.
The third great war will begin when the great city burns.
Nostradamus composed 942 poems of four lines (quatrains) during his life. He published them in small books of 100 called “Centuries”. The title was a common, poetic tool then of a hundred something – not a century ago.
However, his quatrains – written in riddles using obscure words and a mixture of ancient languages - were supposed to predict a millennium of the future of France. The only peaceful date he ever mentioned is July 1999 for the end of the world, and that came first in his quatrain series.
Mikkelson points out that the only thing that resembles Nostradamus in the current deception is the second two lines lifted from his 6th Century, Quatrain 97. I confirm from my own collection of original French quatrains of Nostradamus that the translations into English is close enough for government work:
Five and 40 steps the sky will burn.
The fire is approaching the great new city.
Immediately a large thin flame will jump out.
When someone wants to try the Normans.
The second and third “prophecies” of today’s engagement are a mixture of the example of the 1990s and new lines dreamed up to adapt to the catastrophe of the World Trade Center.

Nostradamus was born in 1502 to Jewish parents at the height of the Inquisition. The family converted to Catholicism when he was nine years old to avoid persecution, torture or death. Thus, he was raised in the Roman Catholic faith and became a devout adherent.
As a child, Michel was a brilliant student. He was enrolled in the best schools where at an early age he earned a doctorate as a doctor. He built a large practice and was renowned for his innovative approach to patient care. For example, he refused to bleed his patients. The drastic technique was then a popular remedy for many health problems.
Nostradamus married a young woman whose name is not recorded. She gave him two children. During the Black Death epidemic, his wife and children died. He became excessively despicable and took to wandering around the city, earning money by casting horoscopes.
A few of his astrological predictions – with generous interpretations – seem to have predicted dire events. His fame spread. Kings and popes consulted him.
He settled in Salon, France, and married a rich widow. His home is still a popular tourist attraction. He devoted the rest of his life to “telling fortunes” for distinguished clients and writing his best-selling books.
Nostradamus died in 1566, apparently having predicted his own death. He was buried straight in a wall of the Church of the Cordeliers at Salon. His widow, Anne, erected a splendid marble plaque to his memory.
In 1700, the coffin of Nostradamus was moved to a larger wall of the church. The coffin was opened to see if it also contained a secret document. It is said that on the chest of his skeleton there was a plaque on which the date 1700 was inscribed.

Of the prophets of Nostradamus, about 30 were most often mentioned to support important events. These are supposed to identify three “anti-Christ” figures who have – or will – bedevil the world.
Will McWhorter, a neutral interpreter of the mysteries of Nostradamus, identifies two of the three evil characters that could fit. The first is Napoleon – perhaps revealed by a dozen quatrain lines taken out of context. A few follow:
An emperor will be born near Italy.
It will cost the Empire dear.
He will be found less prince than butcher.
A large group will come to Russia.
The tired will die in the white territory.
By a great effort of the foreign forces it was won.
The captive prince, conquered, is sent to Elba.
The second anti-Christ of Nostradamus, and the Second World War, is identified by McWhortrer as Hitler. As will be seen, Hitler’s name should be exchanged with the Latin word for Danube – but close is good in the business of prophecy:
He will come to rule the earth.
He will stir up a long dormant hatred.
The child of Germany does not observe the law.
Cries, and tears, fire, blood and battle.
The beasts saved with hunger will cross the rivers.
The battlefield will be against Hister.
Nostradamus aficionados are struggling with the identity of the third anti-Christ who will be followed by World War III. The bets are heavy on this quartet:
Out of the country of Great Arabia.
A strong teacher of Mohammed will be born.
He will enter Europe wearing a turban.
It will be the terror of mankind.
No more terror.
People who believe in prophecy can pay their money and make their choice.
