Teaching Speaking to Non-Speakers
One of the challenges in teaching English as a second language is teaching speaking. Speaking is one of the main skills along with reading, writing and listening. Many second language or ESL students can read and write many times in activities and tasks but the same has not been done or not done in speaking skills.
Speaking skills required not only dedication but also determination on the part of second language learners. First, students must overcome negative emotions such as shyness (fear of being laughed at by peers), resistance (not wanting to try at all) and resistance (turning off/ not being motivated to learn to speak). These behaviors will prevent learning even before it begins. And it will be difficult for ESL teachers to provide once-in-a-lifetime well-structured instruction specifically for the skills you want.
On the other hand, the role of teachers can be to encourage second language learners. Teachers can come up with interesting, authentic and relevant topics that students can discuss or discuss especially in the target language. Related topics should be simple and clear. At first ESL teachers can match the topics to students’ interests before moving on to larger topics like national affairs or international politics.
As an ESL teacher I realized that teaching speaking is not as easy as it sounds. From my experience it really started within the students, as long as they are willing to try, usually and usually they will win at the end of the day with flying colors. When learning to speak, encouragement and determination can often come from second language learners. Teachers and administrators are only testers. The only method is like trial and error but it is worth trying something that can be the most important skill in the world.
