ESL Teachers’ Guide to Teach Business English Communication Skills to Students

English is the world’s business language today. Many schools, colleges and universities are all offering English teaching to students and business professionals. With the demand for English, many ESL teachers are also trained to meet the international needs of ESL education.

For example, in many Asian and African countries, English is taught as a Second or Third Language. Also, there are many varieties of English that are given the power of the mother tongue in countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, India, Brunei, Australia and Canada. As an ESL teacher, you’ll find that the ESL teaching manual provides you with a quick list of tips, helping you make your ESL classes fun and easy for foreign students.

1) Understand Your ESL Students:

Basically, you will have two types of students – university students and corporate clients. ESL students are those who do not have English as their mother tongue. They need help with Basic English grammar and advanced English conversation for everyday life. Corporate business clients are managers and employees who need to brush up their English in an ESL class in order to communicate effectively in international business. By understanding your ESL students, you will be able to create teaching strategies that meet their needs.

2) Breaking the Ice:

Breaking the silence in the first 10 minutes of any ESL class is essential to success. Many ESL students are shy to speak and write anything in English. With a good and supportive learning environment, you will be able to encourage them to try to speak and write in English every day. To break the ice, you need to make the first 10 minutes fun and interesting so that your students open up and speak English freely through small games and exercises. Start fun games to introduce each other, tell funny stories, or explain something in English.

3) Create Conversational Activities:

Learning English doesn’t have to be boring. Make your classes fun and engaging for all your ESL students. Then, they will be interested in learning and will be engaged in all studies. Organize learning activities that keep your ESL students engaged and able to learn from each other. Ask for their thoughts and ideas on new topics. Discuss the problems and difficulties they face in speaking and writing English. Include seasonal events (such as New Years, Thanksgiving and Christmas) as part of your training curriculum.

4) Focus on Communication Skills:

If there is one thing you can teach ESL students, it is to focus on their communication skills. This means helping them improve their day-to-day conversations with others, improve their telephone skills and polish their writing style. With phone conversations, ESL students will not have visual aids so it is important to speak clearly and slowly. When in doubt, he will always ask a question to clarify and confirm what he wants to say. With written communication, ESL students only need to try to write something or everything every day from a simple note, letter, call or email message to a full story or report assignment. Teach them the correct choice of words and sentences to reduce confusion for others. Practice speaking in front of the mirror every morning and night.

5) Use the words:

In many cases, ESL students cannot communicate effectively due to lack of proper vocabulary. Then, without the right vocabulary, they face social and cultural barriers to communicate effectively in different situations. Help your students build their vocabulary using a variety of teaching tools. Make flash cards. Create digital folders. Use the latest games and apps on mobile devices. Think about the type of words that will help them communicate effectively in school or business. Sometimes, English words have different meanings in different cultures and situations and it is your job as an ESL teacher to explain and explain how to use these words in detail.

6) Experiment with Games:

The best way to learn is through real life experiences. In your classroom, you can use regular exercises to create activities that model how ESL students should speak and respond to others. For example, you can have a variety of activities from ordering fast food and eating in fancy restaurants to having questions about a job and talking to a customer. This way your ESL students will learn how to observe, listen and respond to different situations.

7) Teach Good Social and Business Ethics:

Helping your ESL students communicate effectively also means teaching them good morals and business skills. This means teaching them manners, respect, social norms, business customs and traditions. ESL students will need to learn how to communicate with appropriate vocabulary and manners from casual to formal. Most importantly, you can teach ESL students both verbal and non-verbal communication techniques. For example, making good eye contact, shaking hands, greeting people, and expressing their feelings with their hands.

8) Give Positive Feedback:

Anyone can give feedback or feedback, but you as an ESL teacher will need to give positive and encouraging feedback to your ESL students. They should be encouraged and supported, so that they can continue to learn and improve their English. Learning a new language like English is difficult for some because their native language has a very different style and tone. Your positive attitude will translate into their positive attitude towards learning English. Give examples and tips to help them understand what is right and wrong to speak and write every day.

With these eight ESL teaching strategies above, you will become an effective and efficient ESL teacher who is loved by all your ESL students. Even if there are quizzes, tests or grades on paper, your ESL students will always remember what they experienced and felt in each ESL class. You exist to provide a positive, supportive and encouraging learning environment without judgement, but an opportunity to learn and grow as an individual. Be proud of yourself.
