The Use of English And Communication Skills in the Nigerian Society
In Nigerian schools, the English language is the medium of expression and instruction from primary to secondary school and tertiary institutions. As an official language of Nigerians, English occupies a special place in the hearts of the people. As a multi-ethnic country, each ethnic group in Nigeria is identified with one or more local languages, but due to the need to unite these ethnic groups without engendering jealousy or ethnic disputes, English has been made official, but a second language in the country. .
The dominance of English in the major domains of the country, such as the education sector, the courts, the media, politics, business and interaction, has left many people confused and handicapped in the development of the their ethnic languages. In Nigeria today, a credit in English is one of the prerequisites for admission to a University or other institutions of learning. To ensure admission, it remains the only language of instruction used to teach subjects other than languages. No other Nigerian language is accorded the status symbol that English enjoys. That is why a professional use of English language is usually respected in Nigeria.
As the language of interaction and a parameter to judge one’s educational achievements, the English language has succeeded in pushing all other Nigerian languages to the back door.
In my secondary school days, I attended a Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) exhibition held at the school premises. In the reference room, place of the exhibition, there were books displayed for sale. Unknown to me, my school principal was sitting behind the display table. As I approached the bookseller, I asked for the price list of the books displayed using my local Igbo language. My choice of the local language caught the attention of the Principal who looked at me disappointed. His displeasure at my choice of language sent me out of the room leaving the bookseller speechless, book in hand.
The next morning, he was the subject of his usual morning assembly address. However, in my final exams, I blew it further by managing only a Pass in English Language while getting Distinction in my local Igbo Language. Despite this great feat, I was not able to achieve anything with high quality in my local language until I passed English well in another exam.
Besides helping to kill people’s development and interest in their local languages, English also dominates the language of modern medicine, technology, academic publications, and the Internet. Even Nigerians today, have invented so many words from their local languages and integrated them into their spoken English to achieve a deeper level of communication, but it must be understood that our local languages appeal deeper to our feelings or emotions more than the English Language. . Our local languages help to evoke emotions such as pity, joy, sadness, etc., and also to raise awareness, for example, in times of war, both to fight and to make peace.
When we begin to accept our local languages as prerequisites for admission to our institutions of learning or as a means of instruction in the classroom, it will help, not only for an easier understanding of students, but also for the development of these languages. There is an adage that says: “the hood does not make the monk”. Nigerians should know that being proficient in the English language can never take away our Nigerian identity – it will never make us English!
