Kathakali The Classical Dance Form Of Kerala
Kathakali the classical dance form of Kerala originated in Kerala 400 years ago. Kathakali is an art form where music, dance and drama are incredibly synchronized which in Kathakali constitute three fine arts, abhinayam or recitation, nrityam or dance, and geetham or singand.
In Kathakali there is a perfect combination of five elements of art. Expressions (Natyam), Dance (Nritham), Enactment (Nrithyam), Song/vocal attribute (Geetha), Instrument attribute (Vadyam).
In Kathakali, the story is made only by hand movements called mudras and facial expressions called rasas and body movements. The expressions are developed from Natyashastra. There are 24 basic mudras, each can be classified again in ‘Samaana-mudras which is a mudra representing two elements or misra-mudras which is the two hands are used to show these mudras.
Sringaram which is love, Hasyam which is mood, bhayanakam which is fear, Karunam which is desolation, Roudram which is anger, Veeram which is courage, Beebhatsam which is disgust, Adbhutam which is wonder and the last one is Shantam these are the nine expressions face them by a Kathakali artist named Navarasams.
The performing artist does not sing or speak in Kathakali, Manipravalam is the language of the songs used in Kathakali. Although most of the songs are set in ragas based on Carnatic music, there is a distinct style of clear note interpretation, which is known as Sopanam style. In Kathakali there are four musical instruments used are Chenda, Maddalam, Chengila and elathalam. The music created with these instruments called melam. There are usually two singers to sing the music. In both singers, one of them uses chengila to create a steady rhythm.
The most famous stories in Kathakali are Nalacharitham (story from Mahabharatha), Duryodhana vadham (concentration on the Mahabharatha war), Kalyanasougandhikam (the story of Bhima going to get flowers for his wife Panchali), Keechakavadham, Kiratham (the fight of Arjuna and Lord Shiva, the Mahabharata), Karnashapatham, Nizhalkuthu.
In Kathakali the vesha which is the dress is mainly classified into four, Pacha (Sathwika, the hero), Kathi (the villain), Minukku (for female characters) and Thaadi. These are the four costumes used in Kathakali.
Pacha – The makeup known as pacha is attributed to the heroes of the story, Examples of those characters are Dhirodatta, noble kings like Nala, Yudhishtra, Rukmangada, Arjuna and Bhimsena. All characters under pacha wear Kiritas But when it comes to characters like Vishnu, Krishna or Rama, the Kiritas have changed to Mudi, so this costume is also called mudi. The facial makeup is the same as mudi and pacha, except that Krishna wears a dark jacket instead of a purple or red jacket from Pacha.
Kathi- The dress is similar to the pacha, except in the make-up., A knife-shaped pattern is drawn on each cheek in red pigment and a small ball is fixed at the tip of the nose and also in the head This costume is usually for villain characters like Ravana, Kamsa and Duryodhana. Except pacha characters kathi characters make scary noises when emotion is expressed.
Thadi-Thamoguna which is the wickedness is represented in this costume, there are three types of thadis red black and white. The destructive force of evil is represented in the red thadi costume. The crown of the white thadi is known as Vattamudi, a formal military hat like a hat and a white beard, the example of the white thadi character is Hanuman (A preeminent character in Hindu mythology). like kali in Nalacharitha, like red thadi, this also represents evil. The make-up is the same as that of the red thadi, except that the beard is only in black color.
Kari-The kari is a purely black costume, The face makeup the jackets and jokes are all in black. The boss is the same. the costume is used to characterize human beings and women and men. They also provide a voice like wailing.
Chutti- White makeup plays an important role in Kathakali makeup. In the most ancient time, the chutti was placed with a mixture of rice paste and lime. The chutti is used to increase the contour of the face, so that the facial expression can be clearly marked.
Minukku-Makeup is generally used for female characters. Dress and makeup is completely different from other characters. Women, sages and Brahmanas appear in ‘Minukku’. Other characters that appear in Minukku are charioteers and messengers.
