Study Abroad

In recent years, the number of Indian students going abroad for higher education is increasing day by day. A large number of students travel overseas to obtain a degree in a series of educational streams, management, engineering, medicine, fine arts, information technology, among others. The charm of obtaining a foreign degree assumes significance as it not only provides a student with relevant skills and training but also enriches their experience by exposing these students to a global culture. And getting a foreign degree or diploma has become much more accessible today. This is because many countries have opened special departments and cells in India itself to provide comprehensive assistance to budding professionals in their educational dream. These departments – many of them working under the aegis of their respective embassies – provide invaluable assistance regarding admission, visa and life. Not only that, the number of foreign destinations where students can go for higher studies has increased manifold in the last five years or so. And with educational loans readily available, students make a beeline to study at the college and university of their choice.

Although the United States and the United Kingdom are still the favorites followed by Australia, France and Germany, many more destinations have joined the ranks. We provide you with a list of some sought-after educational destinations.

The United States

Students can get information about education in the United States from the United States Educational Foundation in India, commonly known as USEFI. Admission Test for the United States: Most American colleges and universities require scores from one or more of the standardized admission tests. Students can visit individual college websites for information on admission requirements. International students whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A few institutions may accept scores from other English language exams.

Students who aspire to pursue university studies in the United States will be required by the university to take the SAT Reasoning Test and the SAT Subject Tests. Most graduate departments require students to take one or more of the following: GRE – Graduate Record Examination (general test); GRE – Graduate Record Examination (subject test); GMAT – Graduate Management Admission Test; and TSE – Test of Spoken English Programs in law, medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine require: LSAT – Law School Admission Test; MCAT – Medical College Admission Test; DAT – Dental Admission Test; PCAT – Pharmacy University Admission Test and VCAT – Veterinary Aptitude Test.

In addition, there are many other tests that students can take, depending on their requirement. These are: USMLE – United States Medical Licensing Examination; CGFNS – Council for Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools; CPA- Certified Public Accountant Exam.

The United Kingdom

The most popular high school diplomas are Bachelor’s degrees (also called bachelor’s degrees or first degrees), which are now required for entry into a wide range of careers in the United Kingdom andother countries. British degree programs incorporate the most recent developments in the subject. Many universities and colleges now cooperate to provide degree courses, and this has also increased the number and variety of courses and study environments. For English proficiency one must take IELTS or International English Language Testing System.

Undergraduate and postgraduate applications are processed through UCAS (University and College Admission Service), a centralized clearing agency. UCAS forms are available on the UCAS website. UCAS is working towards a 100% electronic application system, called ucasapply. UCAS Apply is a secure web-based online application system for all students (UK and International). The key message from UCAS is that all international students move as quickly as possible from the traditional paper-based application method to the electronic UCAS Apply application.

Australia

The latest enrollment data for the year to date (YTD), August 2008 shows that more than 80,000 Indian students had enrolled to take an Australian qualification in 2008. India is now the second source country for the industry Australia’s international education. Many Indian students study mainly in the fields of postgraduate studies. This contrasts with less than 500 Indian students in the early 1990s and 10,000 Indian students in 2001.

Canada

The Canadian Education Center (CEC) – INDIA was established in June ’95 with the support of the Government of Canada to provide information and counseling services to students interested in studying in Canada. There are 14 CEC offices around the world, which provide comprehensive information on educational courses and training facilities.
