How To Give Commands in the Spanish Language Using Vos

Let’s continue to talk about how to give commands using “vos” in the Spanish language. In a previous lesson, I showed how to use the command form or imperative form of “vos”. I also said that after hours and hours of research I did not find a single website that gave the rules and exceptions of how to give commands in Spanish with “vos”.

And I also said that the rules I am sharing with you are from what I have learned from personal experience. And that after asking many university-educated friends in Medellín, who studied many foreign languages, no one was able to articulate the grammatical rules of giving commands with “vos” because “vos” is not taught in schools anymore than how- speak-slang is taught in school.

It is something that happens to you only by learning to use it properly from the time you are a child only by being born in a country or region where “vos” is used.

So the only way I could identify the grammatical rules (and exceptions to the rules) for giving commands with “vos” was to spend months and months in Medellín, Colombia, and always be prepared with a “lapicero y libreta en mi pocket”. (pen and pad in my pocket) and listening to Paisas (the “people” or people of Medellín), and asking them countless questions

such as:

How to give commands with the verbs “competir”, “hervir”, “gemir”, “preferir”, “morir”, “sugerir” and other verbs that change “ir” until you identify a pattern. And that “pattern” is what I call the grammatical rules, and the exceptions to the rules, of giving commands with “vos”.

But before giving some examples of how to give commands with vos using stem change “ir” verbs and “irregular” verbs, I want to remind you of the two rules I gave in my last email about the use of “vos” with commands:

Rule Number One: The imperative of you never changes in the roots of the verbs unless they are verbs with changed roots and “ir” in the negative. That is, the imperative of “vos” never changes into the verb of a verb, unless the verb is a changing verb “ir” and you use it in the negative.

Rule Number Two. The negative is the same as the negative of tú but with an accent on the last syllable. That is, the negative is the same as the negative of “tú” but with an accent on the last syllable. But don’t forget the exception to this “rule” or rule that I listed under “Regla Número Uno” that pertains to negative commands that use “ir” verbs that change stem.

So now I will show you how to use “vos” with “ir” verbs that change stem. If you have a copy of the Verbarrator software, then you already know that in the present tense, stam-changing verbs ending in “ir” are grouped into one of three patterns based on the stam vowel change:

But this is not the same change that occurs with “ir” verbs that change stem when giving commands with “vos” – in the negative.

When giving negative commands with “vos”, the changing verbs “ir” make these changes:

Let me give you some examples of commands with “vos” that use “ir” verbs that change stem:

compete – compete (compete) – senza compitás (don’t compete)

hervir – herví (boil) – without hirvás (do not boil)

gemir – gemí (groan) – no gimás (don’t complain)

preferir – preferí (preferì) – no prefirás (don’t prefer)

morir – morí (die) – no murás (don’t die)

sugerir – suggest (suggest) – senza sugirás (do not suggest)

Now I will give you some examples of commands with “vos” with irregular verbs:

ser – sé (to be) – seás (not to be)

decir – decí (says) – no digás (don’t say)

tener – tené (to have) – no tengás (not to have)

So that’s what I discovered about giving commands with “vos” with “ir” verbs that change stem and irregular verbs. Like I said, you won’t find this in a Spanish grammar book on any website. That’s what I discovered from months and months of analysis and deduction, taking lots of notes, and asking lots of questions.
