MOOC: Get Hooked With MOOC and See Big Difference With Your Learning Journey
Moocing has been the “in” thing ever since the internet became a great avenue for learning, learning and unlearning – caused by bad teaching and the like – due to indoctrination by some, the miseducation of few and a myriad of propaganda for selfish interest.
Today, we’re lucky to have another moocer — and field leader as well — to share with us his experiences when the mooc virus hooked him, and now he’s hooked on mooc!
- Introduce yourself, Bryant.
I am Bryant Bennet Dialogo Atencia, 30 years old, Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English at Colegio De San Juan De Letran on June 11, 2019.
I am also an ESL teacher at 51talk for 2 years, I teach different types of English including English for first learners, basic grammar, English for travelers and business for children from 6 to 60 years old.
I have also been with the BPO industry for 8 years managing multiple accounts. The last was with Australia’s leading telecommunications company, Telstra. I am a Customer First Champion who meets their immediate needs.
I am an ultra-marathoner on the weekends, running from different roads here in Laguna, Quezon & Batangas for almost 5 years. The reason I am a running enthusiast is the health benefits it gives me and the camaraderie of the running community. I have been part of many ultra-marathon events such as Laguna to Rizal, Laguna to Quezon, Rizal to Laguna to Quezon and other events.
- How did you get into MOOCs? Who introduced you to moocing?
I got interested in the MOOCing world when my old teacher Ms. Glen Cortezano posted the details on FACEBOOK last February. She said there is a free international certificate to take course that would increase our skills as an educator so immediately, I messaged her and asked for the details.
- What was your first MOOC? What was your impression then?
My 1st MOOC was English for Middle Literacy where I took it as LSPU LB under the supervision of Ms. Glen. I was amazed with the course itself and immediately fell in love with it, so I gave my 101% to take that course, attended the meetings even on weekends and participated in the outreach program as one of the speakers.
- So is that how you got it wrong?
After that, I asked Mrs. Glen if I can be a leader also because I felt the call once again, to share the beauty of education, not only to my co-educators, but to those who they wanted to enrich their learning mind, and then she immediately said YES, I am able, so I took that opportunity and started my own MOOC CAMP Sta.Rosa.
- How did the mooc virus spread from your field to teachers in Sta. Rosa and nearby areas?
I enjoyed giving the following courses to the teachers of Sta. Rosa, in public and private. We had interesting meetings where they shared their experiences and thoughts about the courses. Most of them were enlightened by the results that the courses have to offer and said that the MOOC courses also arouse the spirit of teaching.
- Wow, good feedback from the moocers! They seemed to enjoy learning through moocing.
Until now, I pursue all the professors I meet as my colleagues to take MOOCs as they have given me a lot. I am the kind of person who wants to share the good things that God offers us.
- As a camp leader, what are the great things you have received?
Through MOOC Leaders Group, I was able to attend prestigious events and presentations such as ResCon 2019 at De La Salle Manila. MOOC lit up my educational side and continues to do so, as it never stops teaching us.
- What are the qualities one must have to become an effective and efficient mooc field leader?
Patience, sir. Without this, a CAMP would not be a camp. In my experience as an ESL Teacher for 2 years, this is the most important trait for me because if you have this, everything will follow. Most professors will give you excuses where in fact, you have educated that the MOOC is not a BIG TASK that has been given to them, but it is a call. If I had not practiced this skill of PATIENCE earlier, I would not have been able to succeed in my career as an educator.
- What challenges have you encountered with moocers?
There was a time sir, on the last course we finished. Most of the teachers gave a lot of excuses for the meeting and the task given. I am always like a leader for them and I gave them all the time and effort to finish the course, but when the person does not help himself, the effort of others does not work. You have faced these challenges, I always offer them the latest MOOC Course because I wanted them to learn what I learn, take advantage of what I like, because this is free and both ends will benefit, them and their students
- Since moocing has helped you become more productive and all, what can you do in return, as a token…or what…of gratitude?
The MOOC welcomed me with open arms and in return, I will spread it to everyone for them to see the beauty of learning at your own comfort. MOOC for me is a supplement where I improve as a person, educator and Filipino citizen. We are taking the opportunity to have a free course that will help us to be world-class educators who produce first-class students. “Salamat sa MOOC and greater multiple education!”
Wow! With this, I am sure that many teachers and non-teachers around will try massive open online courses, and be blessed too!
