The Different Types of Programming Courses
Programming is the skill of the 21st century, and there are many ways you can learn it. They range from online platforms such as Coursera and Codecademy to classrooms held by programming centers or schools and universities.
Learning is best in a classroom environment with the right student to instructor ratio. In addition, there are many types of classes, each has its pros and cons. Before we dive into it, let’s look at the different stages of learning to code.
First stage: Programming fundamentals
Students need to know the “what” of coding before they know “how” to code. They’ll start getting excited about being able to print “Hello World!” on a black and white interface. This is the foundation and therefore the most important part of the learning process – students learn how to move data in the computer’s memory, the different types of data (string, integer, boolean, etc.) and conditionals ( if, then, others, etc.) .) And simply manipulation of data (making words all capital or making mathematical formulas).
Stage Two: Building Computational Thinking
At this point, the phrase “object-oriented programming” will be repeated over and over again. Students will learn about loops (for loop, while loop) and how to control them (break, continue, step) to manipulate data more efficiently. They will start by creating small but functional programs that usually take a few hours to several days to complete. Some examples include simple games like scissors-paper-stone & tic-tac-toe and a calculator for basic math.
Stage Three: Making the First Application Working
After creating many small programs, it’s time for the big one. A fully functional application usually requires the programmer to know several programming languages for different purposes. For example, HTML for websites, CSS for user interface design, JavaScript for logic and SQL for databases. One of the most challenging tasks is to connect the website, server and database to work seamlessly. At this stage, a programmer faces very unique programming problems as he becomes more advanced and technical – a Google search or a search on StackOverflow is often not enough.
The programming learning curve is not steep, but neither is it gradual. Students who start learning online will eventually hit a roadblock as they move from stage two to stage three. Also, different stages have different optimal classroom teaching methods. Let’s look at the different types:
1) Lecture Method
This is the typical class style adopted until tertiary education – an instructor stands in front of a large group of students and conveys information via a sensory pathway. Theoretical knowledge such as principles, concepts and ideas are usually taught in this format. This method is best only when students are new to the topic. In a programming school, the lecture method helps to give an introduction to programming since most of the students are new.
2) Discussion method
This method involves participants actively discussing while the instructor acts as a facilitator. Participants are encouraged to engage with each other by arguing their position and challenging each other. In a programming school, this method encourages students to think outside the box especially because programming is flexible and offers many solutions to the same problem.
3) Method of demonstration
The instructor demonstrates the activity on the screen and in the classroom, giving students a visual opportunity to understand what is being taught. Typically, students also follow what is shown on the screen. In a programming school, this method is very important since students are often overwhelmed by the complexity of programming and online tutorials are often technical. A live demonstration gives them immediate feedback on whether they are going in the right direction.
Modern programming schools teach programming via a hybrid method of discussion and demonstration. They keep their classes small so that the students will receive a lot of attention from the instructors and it also makes them comfortable to ask questions and ask for help.
Sometimes they use proprietary software to make classes enjoyable and effective:
1) The software allows interactive slides that students can interact with.
2) Instructors can see their students’ code as they type, allowing them to give real-time feedback.
3) Students can collaborate since it allows several students to work together on the same script.
4) Includes a video-call function for students to consult the instructor outside of class time.
5) Test bank for students to practice at their own pace.
6) A report after the lesson that is curated for each student with feedback compiled by the system.
Learning programming is important in the 21st century and choosing the right programming school is key to getting a solid foundation.
