Meaning of Socialisation

Sens

Socialization is the process by which children and adults learn from others. We begin to learn from others during the first days of life; and most people continue their social learning throughout life (unless a mental or physical disability slows or stops the learning process).

In other words, socialization is a process with the help of which a living organism is changed into a social being. It is a process through which the young generation learns the role of the adult that they must play later. It is a continuous process in the life of an individual and continues from generation to generation.

need

Every society is faced with the need to make a responsible member out of every child born into it. The child must learn the expectations of society so that his behavior can be trusted. Must acquire the norms of the group. Society must socialize each member so that their behavior will be significant in terms of group norms. In the process of socialization, the individual learns the reciprocal responses of society.

Characteristics of socialization:

1. Instill basic discipline:

Socialization instills basic discipline. A person learns to control his impulses. He can show disciplined behavior to gain social approval.

2. It helps to control human behavior:

It helps to control human behavior. An individual from birth to death undergoes training and his behavior is controlled in many ways. To maintain social order, there are defined procedures or mechanism in the society. These procedures become part of man’s life and man adapts to society. Through socialization, society intends to control the behavior of its unconscious members.

3. Socialization is rapid if there is more humanity among the socializing agencies:

Socialization happens quickly if the socializing agencies are more unanimous in their ideas and skills. When there is a conflict between the ideas, examples and skills transmitted at home and those transmitted by school or peers, the socialization of the individual tends to be slower and ineffective.

4. Socialization takes place formally and informally:

Formal socialization takes place through direct instruction and education in schools and colleges. The family is, however, the primary and most influential source of education. Children learn their language, customs, norms and values in the family.

5. Socialization is a continuous process:

Socialization is a lifelong process. It does not stop when the child becomes an adult. Since socialization does not stop when a child becomes an adult, the internalization of culture continues from generation to generation. Society perpetuates itself through the internalization of culture. Its members pass on the culture to the next generation and the society continues to exist.

Types of socialization:

Although socialization occurs during childhood and adolescence, it continues into middle age and adulthood. Orville F. Brim (Jr.) described socialization as a lifelong process. He argues that adult socialization differs from childhood socialization. In this context it can be said that there are many types of socialization.

1. Primary socialization:

Primary socialization refers to the socialization of the child in the primary or first years of his life. It is a process by which the child learns language and cognitive skills, internalizes norms and values. The child learns the ways of a given group and is formed into an effective social participant of that group.

Society’s norms become part of the individual’s personality. The child has no sense of right and wrong. Through direct and indirect observation and experience, he gradually learns the norms regarding wrong and right things. Primary socialization is in the family.

2. Secondary Socialization:

The process can be seen at work outside the immediate family, in the “peer group”. The growing child learns very important lessons in social behavior from his peers. He also learns lessons in school. Therefore, socialization continues outside and outside the family environment. Secondary socialization generally refers to the social training received by the child in institutional or formal environments and continues throughout the rest of his life.

3. Socialization of adults:

In adult socialization, actors enter roles (for example, becoming an employee, husband or wife) for which primary and secondary socialization have not fully prepared them. Adult socialization teaches people to take on new roles. The goal of adult socialization is to bring about change in the views of the individual. The socialization of adults is more likely to change overt behavior, while the socialization of children shapes basic values.

4. Anticipatory Socialization:

Anticipatory socialization refers to a process by which men learn the culture of a group in anticipation of joining that group. As a person learns the beliefs, values and norms of a status or group to which he aspires, he learns how to act in his new role.

5. Re-socialization:

Re-Socialization refers to the process of discarding old behavior patterns and accepting new ones as part of a transition in one’s life. Such re-socialization takes place especially when a social role has changed radically. It involves the abandonment of one way of life for another which is not only different from the former, but incompatible with it. For example, when a criminal is rehabilitated, he has to change his role radically.

The importance of socialization:

Socialization is an important part of the personality formation process in each individual. It is true that genetics is the reason for the structure of human personality, but socialization is what causes this personality to be modified in specific directions through the process of accepting or rejecting social beliefs, attitudes and norms . Due to the dynamics in socialization, we tend to have different personalities even if we live in the same society. In the process of socialization, the individual learns the culture and skills, ranging from language to manual dexterity that will enable him to become a participating member of human society.

Socialization instills basic disciplines, ranging from toilet habits to the method of science. In his early years, the individual is also socialized in terms of sexual behavior. Society is also concerned with imparting the basic goals, aspirations and values to which the child is expected to direct his behavior for the rest of his life. He learns the levels to which he is expected to aspire.

In this way, man becomes a person through the social influences he shares with others and through his own ability to respond and weaves his responses into a unified body of habits, attitudes and characteristics.
