Students With Learning Disabilities – Benefits of Knowing Your Learning Style

What are learning styles? Learning styles are the channels through which we take in information. Like other communication channels (ie, the internet, your cable company), some work better than others. When discussing how we learn, we look at three channels: auditory (ears), visual (eyes), kinesthetic or haptic (our hands/bodies). Some people have a very strong channel through which they take information; others learn best through a combination of channels. Why is it important for a student to know his learning style?

* If we study with our strongest channel, we will be more effective.
* We will have a greater memory of what we have learned.
* Our grades will increase!

Here are the characteristics of each learning style. Read the traits in each list and try to determine your style(s).

AUDITORIUM

Now, to confirm your prediction, take a learning styles inventory online, preferably on a college’s website.

Along with your results, you’ll receive helpful study suggestions that fit your style(s) to a tee. Print it out and be sure to use it the next time you prepare for an exam. Now, compare those test results with the previous ones. Have you improved? If so, it worked! Just keep studying the same way. If your results were not better, go back and take the inventory again. It is possible that you answered some questions inaccurately.

Once you get a true picture of how you learn, you should find studying more productive and engaging. You should also see an improvement in your test results!
