Can I Learn to Be Intuitive?

Intuition could be described as instinct, an insight, a hunch, or perhaps a certain knowingness you might have arrived at without rational process. We all have it in varying degrees, but did you know that you can learn to be more intuitive? In my own personal exploration, I have discovered different ways to develop intuition.

Believe that you have it

Before you to start to develop you need believe that you have this capacity, which is innate to everyone. Not believing, on the other hand is a circuit-breaker.

Learn how your own intuition speaks to you

For some people, intuition is somatic, that is it speaks through the body. We might feel something in a certain part of the body, especially the solar plexus area. Have you ever met someone and had a certain “gut-wrenching” feeling that you couldn’t trust him/her. That feeling is real.

Some people hear a whisper in their head. This happens to me often, almost as if a voice is speaking. It can be a one word “yes” or “no” answer to a question I’ve asked or the name of a person, or sometimes I even hear the lyrics to a song playing in my head. All these little tidbits contain pieces of an answer I’m looking for.

Sometimes, intuition might speak through a passage in a book that has just opened to the right page after it was dropped. Other times, it can speak through symbols that appear on your mental screen as you can close your eyes to visualize and see a significant.

Start with yes/no questions

Learning the language of your intuition is an ongoing process. Ask yourself a question that would have a “yes” or a “no” as an answer. See if you can start to learn the difference between what feels like a “yes” and what feels like a “no”. For me, “yes” feels like flow, downhill or downstream. Sometimes, I simply hear the word “yes” in my head. A “no”, on the other hand, has a kind of “stuck” energy to it, one of struggle, a feeling like the brakes are on, or perhaps an anxious knot that forms in my stomach. Whatever you get, trust it. The more you trust the answers, the easier it will become to effortlessly access your own internal knowingness.

Keep an intuition notebook

In your intuition notebook, record your questions and answers about any topic. Start with yes/ no questions and then move on to more complex ones. Before you ask the questions, relax a bit, then wait for an answer. Remember how your intuition speaks to you and write down the answers that you receive. Try not to censor yourself. As events unfold around you, compare the outcomes of your questions to what you initially wrote down. See how many times you were right. You may surprise yourself as to how many times you were right. We really do know.

Dialoguing with the “greater self” technique

This is one I practice through writing. I imagine I am talking to a friend. I ask the question in writing. Then I pause, then write the answer as if I am another person giving advice. Often what comes out is great wisdom. I believe that friend is really the greater self, or the higher self as some people call it. The higher self is the aspect of yourself that knows, that sees the bigger picture.

Journaling

Get into the habit of journaling. Create a private electronic journal or handwrite one in a notebook. Journaling, itself, is a way to access your inner knowingness. As you write in your own stream of consciousness without any censoring, you will find that you already know the answers to your questions, that you already had the insight or the wisdom. Trust these. I have often looked back on past relationships to see that the seeds of problems, for instance, were evident at the outset, and my writing was a conduit for the insight. There it is,  staring me in the face on the page, and I was right from the outset.

Meditate

Any kind of meditation and relaxation can open the portals of your mind and reduce the inner chatter. When your mind is relaxed, you will not censor yourself and be more open to the information you receive.

Learn to recognize the “Aha” feeling

The “Aha” feeling is a kind of “click” in your body and mind. You know it when you feel it. It’s almost as if your inner guidance is telling you, “of course”, “that’s right”. You are certain. You just know and don’t question it. Again, recognizing you’re “aha’s” takes a bit of practice.

Intuition is innate to all of us. Following these easy steps can help you access and improve your inner knowingness.
