Understanding Children With Dyslexia and How to Deal With Them

Dyslexia is a condition that describes a certain dysfunction in learning due to a disorder of the central nervous system. The manifestation is difficulty in reading and spelling. This condition has something to do with the way the brain interprets language and number symbols. Children with dyslexia are not necessarily stupid, but the abnormal brain interpretation function prevents learning. Although teaching children with this special condition is difficult, it should not be impossible.

The thing with dyslexics is that they all don’t show the same symptoms, so a technique that works for one may not work for another. The condition is known to be inherited, so parents with dyslexia have a high possibility of having children with the same condition. Some children with the condition experience an inability to read the way normal children do. Some show confusion even with simple words, so that WAS can be read as SAW. In many dyslexic children, there is an obvious and exaggerated confusion with words with similar construction. When reading the words is disturbed, so follows the writing. In a critical period of language development, when children usually learn a wide variety of words, dyslexics are left behind. When the child is left without the proper learning aids and tools, he might have difficulty developing his language. This impairment affects learning in all scales and all subjects.

Another problem experienced by people with dyslexia is that they are unable to understand speech because the brain is unable to process verbal stimuli. Thus, even if they hear a story or a poem well spoken, they will have difficulty understanding what they have heard. The result is his speech department is also unfair to some extent depending on the degree of his dyslexia.

In general, the linguistic facility of these children is destroyed, with all the faculties (reading, writing, listening and speaking) affected. Thus, it is difficult for them to convey their thoughts as it is difficult for them to understand others.

However, it is not the end of the world for these children because with proper training and special education methods and approaches in education, they can do well as children of their age. A properly facilitated learning scheme can greatly help children with learning disabilities. Handling children with special conditions is out of the hands of typical teachers. Only a trained special education teacher can treat children with dyslexia because the wrong instruction could cause frustration among dyslexic children. However, the condition must be detected first for the appropriate assistance methods to be carried out. Children with dyslexia can still learn, but not in the same way that typical children can.

Education and training suitable for dyslexics are everywhere and there are centers dedicated to children with this special condition. A multisensory learning environment (where the auditory, visual and tactile faculties work in harmony) can stimulate learning in the right way. One of the important aspects of special training for dyslexics is spelling training, which focuses heavily on vowels and consonant sounds. Learning the phonetic sounds is basic to learning to read. Once the relationships between vowels, consonants, diphthongs and clusters and their corresponding sounds are established, learning to read and spell becomes easier for these children.

Applicable even for typical children, repetition and exercises for mastery are also important for dyslexics. But for them, the instruction and training are more intense, often including a lot of relationships between the combination of letters and their sounds in different words. This teaching includes learning materials such as flashcards and games. Visual tools and audio drills are also significant tools for effective learning. Dyslexia spelling helps improve children’s language skills. A good way to motivate them is to let them see their improvement. As much as possible, training should be fun and not stressful.
