An Introduction to Phonics
Phonics is the process that is used to teach children to read and write and is taught in most primary schools in the UK. Basically, children learn the individual sounds and stress of words to eventually combine these sounds into words. The process works to develop the child’s phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and identify phonemes (individual sounds that letters make) so a child can understand that words are made up of sounds. They can then establish that these sounds can be used in different ways to make different words. There are about forty four phonemes in the English language. An example of the phonemes in “snail” would be: sn-ai-l. The sound “ai” has two letters but only one sound.
Phonetics is generally taught in four stages, children are typically taught very basic, pure initial sounds (usually when they are in reception) to begin with, for example, a for Apple and b for bat. The second stage focuses on blending sounds to make actual words, such as dog to make dog. Once this has been understood, the child will move on to the next stage which is much more complex. Two letter sounds are blended together to make a complete new sound, eg sh-op to make shop. The next stage involves a much more difficult letter sound like qu-i-ck for quick. The “qu” sound is quite complicated for new students, the sounds will gradually become more difficult and students need to understand them all to be effective readers. Once the sound has been understood, children use the phonics process to phonetically sound out and recognize the words.
As the child progresses, the phonics will become much more complex and they will move on to larger and longer words. Phonetics is usually taught every day in most schools, it has been proven to be one of the best methods of teaching children to read and write. There are several phonics programs that schools are able to follow. The programs involve interesting and fun ways to make phonics enjoyable for children. Resources such as board games, flash cards, activity sheets and books make the learning process exciting and add interest for teachers and parents. In addition to learning phonics in the classroom, it is important to ensure that the activities are also carried out at home. The teaching and learning of phonics must be effective and consistent, as it is a cornerstone for a child’s reading success.
